Gear Check: Seven Essential items for Winter Running

Here are seven must have items for your winter running.

1. Hot Hands Hand Warmers. I bought the value pack at Walmart and carry these hand warmers with me on all my winter long runs. They are perfect to stick in my mittens to keep my fingers warm on cold days. I also slip these inside my jacket pockets, to keep my phone from freezing during my runs.

2. Hot Hands Toe Warmers. These toe warmers have literally changed my life, making it possible to run in cold temperatures without freezing my toes. I prefer the toe warmers to the full foot warmers because they stay in place better. Simply peel back the adhesive liner and stick on the insoles of your running shoes. After a long run, I transfer these to my boots or slippers and continue to keep my feet warm throughout the rest of the day.

3. Randy Sun 100% Waterproof socks. These Unisex socks are breathable, yet waterproof and will keep your feet dry on snowy days. These socks are great because they actually work and really are waterproof.

4. Jacket with zippered pockets. A high quality, warm, waterproof, and windproof jacket is a must have on cold wet winter days. I prefer zippered pockets to carry my gloves, hand warmers, and snacks.

5. YakTrax. Slip these over your favorite running shoes so you don’t slip on your run. YakTrax are great for running on snowy or icy days when you need the extra traction.

6. Face Mask or Balaclava. Keep your face warm while you run. I have a convertible Balaclava that can be pulled up over my mouth and nose, or tucked down when I need to get some fresh air.

7. Fleece lined winter tights. It is important to have warm tights to protect your skin from cold temperatures and wind. There are plenty of great brands to select the perfect pair. When it’s especially cold I often wear a pair of warmups over my tights too.
